Networking Skills: How to Make Connections That Count
Networking is not about collecting business cards or forcing conversations. It is about building genuine relationships with people who can share advice, information and opportunities. These are the skills that make it work.
Prepare a short introduction. In two or three sentences, say who you are, what you do and what you are interested in. Practise it until it sounds natural.
Listen more than you talk. Ask people about their work and what they enjoy about it. Good listeners are remembered warmly.
Show up. Attend industry events, church and community activities, past students' gatherings, UWI and UTech alumni events, and HEART/NSTA Trust open days. Opportunities come from being in the room.
Follow up within a day or two. Send a short message thanking the person for the conversation and mentioning something you discussed.
Offer help. Share an article, introduce two people who should meet or pass on a job lead. Generosity builds trust.
Stay in touch. Reach out every few months, not only when you need something.
Be professional online. Keep your social media profiles tidy and use them to share useful content and congratulate people on their successes.
Be patient and genuine. The best networks are built over years, one honest conversation at a time.
Networking works best alongside an active job search. Keep an eye on the latest roles on Splash Jamaica.
