Emailing Job Applications the Right Way
Most Jamaican employers now accept applications by email, and how you send it matters as much as what is attached. A careless email can get your CV ignored before it is even opened. A few simple habits will make sure yours stands out for the right reasons.
Use a professional email address. Something based on your name works best.
Write a clear subject line. Include the job title and any reference number, for example "Application: Accounts Clerk, Ref AC-12, Jane Brown".
Address the right person. Use the name given in the ad if there is one. If not, "Dear Hiring Manager" is fine.
Keep the email short. Two or three short paragraphs saying which job you are applying for, why you are a good fit and that your CV and documents are attached. Your cover letter can be the body of the email or an attachment, but not both repeated.
Attach the right files. Send your CV as a PDF named with your name. Include scans of certificates, such as CXC results or HEART/NSTA Trust certificates, only if the ad asks for them, and keep file sizes small.
Follow the instructions. If the ad asks for a particular subject line, format or deadline, stick to it. Employers often use this as a first test.
Proofread before you hit send. Check the employer's name, the job title and that the attachments are actually attached.
Send each application separately. Do not send one email to many companies with everyone's address visible.
Follow up politely. If you have not heard back in a week or two, a short, courteous email asking about the status of your application is acceptable.
