Listening for Jobs: Hearing About Openings Before They Are Advertised

· Splash Jamaica · Job search and networking

A lot of jobs in Jamaica are never advertised, or are filled before the ad goes up. The people who get them are often the ones who were listening at the right time. Learning to pick up on these signals can put you ahead of the queue.

Pay attention to business news. A new hotel in Trelawny, a factory expanding in Clarendon or a BPO opening another floor in Montego Bay all mean hiring is coming. Read the business pages and follow local companies on social media.

Watch for change inside companies. Promotions, retirements, restructures and new contracts all create vacancies. If you hear that a manager has moved on, the team below them may be shifting too.

Listen to the people around you. Friends, family, church members, past teachers and former co-workers often hear about openings first. Let them know, politely and specifically, what kind of work you want.

Use official sources. STATIN publishes the Labour Force Survey, which shows which industries are adding jobs. HEART/NSTA Trust also works with employers and can point trainees towards opportunities.

Act quickly. When you hear of something, contact the company that week. A short call or email asking whether they are hiring, with your CV attached, can be enough to get you noticed.

Keep your CV ready. Opportunities that come by word of mouth move fast, so have an up-to-date CV and your certificates ready to send at short notice.

Give back. Share leads with others when they do not suit you. People remember who helped them, and they will return the favour.

Alongside listening, check the job boards. Splash Jamaica has just relaunched and posting jobs is currently free for employers, so new listings are going up all the time.
