Keys to Success at Work
Success at work is rarely about luck. It comes from habits that anyone can build, whether you work in a Kingston office, a north-coast hotel or a family business in May Pen. These are the keys that employers across Jamaica value most.
Show up and be on time. Reliability is the foundation of everything else. If traffic or transport is a problem, plan around it rather than apologising for it.
Set clear goals. Know what you want to achieve this year, both in your job and in your learning, and write it down.
Keep learning. Courses from HEART/NSTA Trust, UTech and UWI, or extra CXC subjects, can open doors. Short online courses and reading in your field count too.
Take ownership. When something goes wrong, focus on fixing it instead of looking for someone to blame. When something goes right, share the credit.
Communicate clearly. Ask questions when instructions are not clear, give updates without being asked and put important things in writing.
Treat everyone with respect. From the security guard to the managing director, the way you treat people gets noticed and remembered.
Stay positive, but be honest. A good attitude helps a team get through busy periods, but do not hide problems that need attention.
Manage your money and your health. Financial stress and burnout affect performance. Take your breaks, rest and plan your budget.
Build relationships. Good colleagues and mentors make work more enjoyable and often lead to new opportunities.
Keep your integrity. Honesty and trust take years to build and moments to lose.
None of these keys require a special title or a big salary. Start with one or two, and build from there. When you are ready for your next step, browse the latest jobs on Splash Jamaica.
