Cold Calling for Jobs: How to Pick Up the Phone with Confidence
Calling a company that has not advertised a job can feel awkward, but it is one of the most effective ways to find work in Jamaica. Many smaller businesses never post vacancies, and a well-timed call can put you first in line. With a bit of preparation, it gets easier every time.
Do your homework. Learn what the company does, where it operates and who is likely to make hiring decisions. A quick look at their website or social media is usually enough.
Ask for the right person. Reception staff can be a great help. Be friendly, give your name and ask who handles hiring for the area you are interested in.
Prepare a short introduction. Keep it to about 30 seconds: who you are, what you do, one or two strengths and why you are calling them. For example: "Good morning, my name is Andre. I've just completed a HEART/NSTA Trust Level 2 in electrical installation and I'm looking for work with contractors in St Ann. I wanted to ask whether you take on apprentices or assistants."
Ask a clear question. Is there an opening now? Are they expecting to hire soon? Can you send your CV or drop it off?
Handle the "no" gracefully. If they are not hiring, ask whether you can send your CV for the future or whether they know anyone who is. Thank them either way.
Follow up in writing. Send your CV the same day with a short note mentioning the call, then make a note in your tracker to check back in a few weeks.
Mind the timing. Avoid Monday mornings and the end of the month for many businesses. Mid-morning, Tuesday to Thursday, often works best.
Keep at it. Not every call will lead somewhere, but each one is practice and some will open doors. Combine your calls with regular checks of Splash Jamaica, where employers can currently post jobs free since our relaunch.
